EPISODE 6 – GENDER AND ABUSE (PART 2)

Abuse in LGBTQI+ relationships

The previous episode explored the power dynamics between cisgender women and men as the root cause of abuse within cisgender heterosexual couples. Despite the widespread belief that this is the case, LGBTQI+ people are not exempt from power dynamics and abuse within their relationships. As there has been little research on this topic in Switzerland, it is difficult to determine the exact extent of this phenomenon. However, according to the non-representative surveys currently available, LGBTQI+ people are just as likely to experience domestic abuse as heterosexual couples, if not more so.

The difficulty is that they are subject to gender norms more than anyone else, and in many different ways. This can lead not only to abuse going unnoticed, but also to difficulties in identifying themselves as victims and seeking help.

This episode focuses on the experiences of four people from the LGBTQI+ community who have experienced abuse in their relationships. Alongside them, Amanda Terzidis suggests some practical ways in which professionals can better welcome and support their experiences.
